Award Definitions

To be eligible for entrance awards, students must be entering the first year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta:

  • Directly from high school with less than 24 IB, AP or A-level credits,
  • Directly from high school with less than 12 credits of university course work taken during high school through Open Studies or a similar program at another accredited post-secondary institution, or
  • Following time taken off between high school and university, provided that no post-secondary credit was received during that time

Should you have any questions as to whether you are eligible for Entrance Awards, please contact the Student Awards Office at awards@ualberta.ca for clarification.

Award Averages

Award averages are calculated using English and four other courses. These four additional courses must fall within the following categories: Humanities (Group A), Fine Arts (Group B), and Sciences (Group C). The Student Awards Office will select the four courses with the highest marks for this average calculation. Equivalent courses are used for non-Alberta students. View the Subject Groups Used for Entrance Scholarships for more information.
Please note that final admission averages, not award averages, are used for Academic Excellence Scholarships.
