How to Apply for Scholarships and Awards

Before you apply for an award, please review the eligibility criteria, application process, and other details. You are also encouraged to read the following “Tips for applying.” 

If you are a new/incoming student, you will first need to apply for admission before you can apply for an award, as you will need your new CCID and password to log in to the award application form. Please note it can take up to two business days to receive your CCID and password.

Some competitions will require essays, personal statements, and/or a reference letter as part of the application. See below for tips specific to individual competitions.

Leadership competitions

Your Leadership Summary is an opportunity for you to describe in your own words your leadership attributes and accomplishments.  

Tips for writing the Leadership Summary:

  • Provide specific examples of your leadership achievements 
  • Explain how you have motivated and inspired others  
  • Describe the depth of your involvement in leadership activities 
  • Explain how your leadership efforts have made a positive impact in an organization, your school, or your community 
  • Demonstrate your progression within leadership positions 

Tips for choosing a reference: 

  • Select a reference who can be objective; try not to use family members if possible 
  • Choose someone who has directly worked with you or supervised you in your leadership role(s) 
  • Choose someone who can give specific examples and has first-hand knowledge of your leadership experience and abilities 

Once your reference’s email address is submitted, they will receive an email with instruction on how to submit a reference letter. They will also be directed to our References page. 

It is your responsibility to ensure that your reference receives their email instructions and are able to access the secure link provided. Please give your reference at least one to two weeks to write and submit their letter. Contact your reference personally and stay in touch with them to ensure they have received the email instructions and can submit the letter on time. Reference letters can only be submitted through the secure link and must be received by the competition deadline. 

Review your awards checklist in Bear Tracks to ensure your application is complete. You and your reference will also receive a confirmation email when the reference form is submitted.


Scholastic Distinction Scholarships

Tips for writing the essay: 

  • Provide specific examples of your involvement in extracurricular activities  
  • Discuss your future goals and how you plan to achieve them 
  • Provide detail about how you might contribute to the University of Alberta community  
  • Explain your scholastic achievements in detail 

Tips for choosing a reference: 

  • Choose someone who can describe first hand at least one of your academic achievements, such as a school official 
  • Have your reference include examples of extracurricular activities you have participated in that have an academic focus, such as science fairs, intellectual competitions, etc. 
  • Select a reference who can be objective; try not to use family members if possible

  • your ability to think critically and independently 
  • the clarity of your writing 
  • your overall intellectual ability 
  • the quality of your work habits and discipline 
  • your motivation, initiative, and work ethic 
  • your engagement in student life 
  • your leadership in student government, student clubs/groups, and your community 
  • your potential for future leadership and growth 

Your reference will only be contacted if further information to support assessment of your application is required. It is your responsibility to ensure your reference is aware that they may be contacted to verify activities you have listed in your application.


Aboriginal Student Services and Métis Education Foundation Awards

Tips for writing the Community Involvement/Leadership Summary:

  • Provide specific examples of your community involvement and/or leadership achievements, focusing on activities connected to your First Nations, Métis, or Inuit community. Students applying for the Métis Education Foundation awards should focus on their involvement in the Métis community. 
  • Explain how you have motivated and inspired others 
  • Describe the depth of your involvement in leadership activities  
  • Explain how your leadership efforts have made a positive impact in an organization, your school, or your community 
  • Demonstrate your progression within leadership positions 

Tips for writing the Métis Education Foundation essay:

  • Provide specific examples of your involvement in the Métis community 
  • Explain how you have motivated and inspired others 
  • Discuss your future goals and how you plan to achieve them 

Tips for choosing a reference:

  • Select a reference who can be objective; try not to use family members if possible 
  • Choose someone who has directly worked with you or supervised you in your community involvement and/or leadership role(s)  
  • Choose someone who can give specific examples and has first-hand knowledge of your community involvement and/or leadership experience and abilities 
  • ASSC and TYP staff will not provide references for the ASSC or MEF Award competitions. 
  • Let reference know which awards you applied for (Aboriginal Student Services and/or Métis Education Foundation Awards)
