University of Alberta Registrar's Web Services: Conditions of Use

For the convenience of students, prospective students, faculty, staff and the community, The University of Alberta Registrar offers several services and information through the Internet. These include those websites and services branded as "Bear Tracks" and others, collectively known as the "Registrar's Web Services."

This notice governs your use of the Registrar's Web Services operated by the University of Alberta Registrar, and/or service providers.

Your use of the Registrar's Web Services constitutes your agreement with the terms, conditions and notices contained herein.

No Warranties or Liability

The Registrar's Web Services are provided "as is, where is" Although efforts are made to ensure that the information and services on the Registrar's Web Services are kept current and free of errors or inaccuracies, the information and services are provided without warranty of any kind. The University does not represent or warrant that the Registrar's Web Services will be available and meet your requirements, that access will be uninterrupted, that there will be no delays, failures, errors or omissions or loss of transmitted information, that no viruses or other contaminating or destructive properties will be transmitted or that no damage will occur to your computer system. You have the sole responsibility for adequate protection and backup of date and/or equipment and to take reasonable and appropriate precautions to scan for computer viruses or other destructive properties.

The Governors of the University of Alberta, its agents, employees or contractors is not responsible for and will not be liable to you or anyone else for any damages whatsoever (including direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages) arising out of or in connection with your use of or inability to use the Registrar's Web Services or the information or services found therein.

Modification of Terms of Use

The University of Alberta reserves the right to change the terms, conditions and notices under which the University of Alberta Registrar's Web Services are offered, without notice. Further, the information, material and content provided in the Registrar's Web Services may be changed at any time without notice. By continuing to use the Registrar's Web Services, you agree to any such changes.

Personal Information Collected

When you visit the Registrar's Web Services, a limited amount of information is automatically collected that is essential for the operation and security of our web site and other related services. Some of this information is used to identify how you connect and does not identify you. However, it could be that other information, such as your Internet domain name or IP address, may identify you, depending upon standards followed by your Internet service provider. You may wish to ask your internet service provider about their policies and practices in this regard.

Certain of the Registrar's Web Services store information on your computer in the form of a "cookie." These cookies are used only to make the use of our systems easier for you. They are not used to gather personal information.

Use of Personal Information

Some services provided through the Registrar's Web Services require that you provide certain personal information. Any personal information that we ask you to provide is collected in compliance with section 33(c) of the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act. The personal information is collected to provide the requested service and will be used only in the context for which it was collected. For further information on the collection and use of the personal information collected you may call the Associate Registrar, Records at 780-492-3113.

To help protect your privacy we use High Grade (128 bit) encryption when dealing with personal information.

Links to Third Party Sites

The Registrar's Web Services may contain links to other internet sites ("Linked Sites"). The Linked Sites are not under the control of the University of Alberta nor is the University of Alberta responsible for the contents of any Linked Site, including and without limitation, any link contained in a Linked Site, or any changes or updates to a Linked Site. The Registrar provides these links to you as a convenience. Inclusion of any link does not imply endorsement of the site or any association with its operators. You are responsible for viewing and abiding by privacy statements and terms of use posted by the Linked Sites.

Right to Use Feedback or Suggestions You Submit

By submitting any feedback or suggestions to the Registrar's Office concerning the Registrar's Web Services, you warrant and represent that you own or otherwise control the intellectual property or copyrights necessary, and you are granting the University of Alberta permission to:

• Use, modify, copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, publish, sublicense, create derivative works from, transfer, or sell any such feedback or suggestions; and
• Sublicense to third parties the unrestricted right to exercise any of the foregoing rights granted with respect to the feedback or suggestions.

The foregoing grants shall include the right to exploit any proprietary rights in such feedback or suggestions, including but not limited to rights under copyright, trademark, service mark or patent laws under any relevant jurisdiction. No compensation will be paid with respect to University of Alberta's use of the materials contained within such feedback or suggestions. The University of Alberta is under no obligation to post or use any materials you may provide and may remove such materials at any time, at the Registrar's sole discretion.

Termination/Access Restriction

Your access privileges to the Registrar's Web Services and the related services or any portion thereof may be terminated at any time, without notice, at the sole discretion of the University of Alberta.

Fees and Refunds

Tuition and other fees are subject to periodic changes, both in amounts charged and type of fees assessed. Although we endeavour to ensure that monetary information displayed on the Web Services are accurate, should there be a discrepancy between that posted on the Registrar's Web Services and those approved by the University's Board of Governors, those approved by the Board of Governors will be assessed.

Pay Information

Pay period information posted on the Web Services is accurate as of the time the pay period processing completed. Pay information is based on authorised information received for processing.

Internet Email

Any unprotected E-Mail communication over the internet is not confidential, subject to possible interception or loss and is also subject to possible alterations. The University of Alberta is not responsible for and will not be liable to you or any one else for any damages in connection with an E-mail sent by you to the University of Alberta or an E-mail sent by the University of Alberta to you.
